After a tow, certified-mail notice must be sent to the registered owner and any lienholders within 20 days, describing the vehicle, where it is stored, and the right to reclaim it. You then have 10 days from the notice to reclaim the car — with a possible five-day extension if you request one — and failing to act waives your ownership rights, letting the vehicle be sold at public auction or sent to a demolisher.
